Biotechnology is the technologies applied to biology, molecular biology, genetics, and many other subfields of biology. Biotechnology utilizes cellular and biomolecular processes to create technologies and products that help improve our lives and the nature. By making useful food, such as bread and cheese, and preserving dairy products, we have done these for many years by now. Recent biotechnology develops breakthrough products and technologies to fight diseases, reduce our environmental harm, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes. .
The Biotechnology section was started as a dream child of chemistry department in the year 2002-03, Dr. V. H. Arali as the first coordinator. At present the co-ordinator for Biotechnology is Dr. Kariyappa S Katagi
The Biotechnology section is sheltered under the chemistry building with well equipped laboratory, classroom and library. It is evolving in strength and facilities day by day to reach the requirement of young minds.
The department of was started with initial admission of 22 students, at present the department having 90 students pursuing their Bachelor’s degree. The department caters the needs of the students by organising regular lectures and conferences by eminent personalities and also the part of curriculum the department is organising industrial visit to research institutes and industries for enriching the academic knowledge of students. The department has produced good number of students, who have achieved the greater heights in their research field during their doctorate and post doctoral studies in India and abroad.
The department has put in special care in developing a library in which several books and volumes are added every year. Students make use of these books regularly which is issued at convenience in the departmental library. The department has its own well equipped laboratory for students to enhance their practical knowledge under the supervision of the respective teachers. Equipment includes Cooling Centrifuge with Rotary Head, Photo Electric Colorimeter, Advanced Microscopes, Binocular Microscopes, Electrophoresis Kit, Rotary Shaker, Laminar Air Flow, Autoclave, Incubator, Refrigerator, Tissue Culture Rack and Hot Air Oven etc.
